Summer Sewing Camps for Kids

Dear Camp-choosing grown-up:  These camps are taught by me, personally, with your young person’s safety and creativity in mind at all times.  With only four students at a time, the projects can be paced to the abilities of each child.  I have been designing sewing programs and teaching youth in this home studio for over 10 years so I know what kids love and how they learn.  I selfishly continue kid camps to learn and be inspired from them, to spark the love of sewing in a new generation and to have a blast in the summer.  Sew much fun!  Hugs & stitches, Helen

Sunny & Hoots Learn-to-Sew Kid Camp, Ages 9-11 Campers will make an appliquéd envelope-back pillow decorated with either Sunny or Hoots up front.  They will learn machine and sewing basics: how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine, to stitch forward, reverse and zig-zag, turn curves, pivot corners, appliqué, simple hand embroidery, and much more.   We will also paint and make paper chain bracelets and put on our scientist hats to make a fab tube of organic lip balm (that mom will want to steal)! All projects have been favorites of my campers for years.  This is a solid and fun intro to machine and easy hand sewing.  Camp is limited to four, so your camper gets lots of one-on-one instruction.

Each day we will break for a snack and a walk Mimi the doxie to our nearby park, weather permitting.

Bring your machine or use one of ours.  All supplies provided. Please specify “Sunny” or “Hoots” in the comments of your shopping cart and let me know your camper’s two favorite colors.  I will have pre-cut kits prepped and ready to stitch!

Intro to Garment Sewing Camp, Ages 12-16  This camp is designed for those older kids who have some sewing background and want to begin sewing clothes.  The projects are simple and something that can be completed during camp.  We will be focusing more on patterns, fabric & sewing and less on campy stuff.  You know if your child is game for this! The following skills will be learned:

  • Sewing pattern anatomy and translation
  • Fabric selection, layout, cutting
  • Transferring pattern markings to fabric
  • Knit fabric techniques for the tee, casings and drawstrings for dress or romper
  • The best seams with intro to the serger
  • Machine hemming

Campers may choose to sew one of the following McCall’s “Learn to Sew for Fun” patterns:

M7755 Romper or Jumpsuit
M7405 Sundress
M7515 Knit tee-shirt or dress and shorts

Prerequisite: Campers must have either taken a “learn to sew camp” or class series here with me or be able to independently (mostly!) thread and operate a sewing machine, sew a straight seam, concentrate, follow directions and work safely. Private lessons are offered for accelerated learning. Read more here.  Email or call 360-896-7206 to arrange a time.
